Awesome Scope!

Best Review on UTG 3 12X44 Compact Mil dot Colors

UTG 3 12X44 Compact Mil dot Colors

This scope is a great deal, I looked at about 20 different scopes (both locally and online) between $30-$175 before settling on this one. In the price range I couldn't find another scope with all the features of this one.

PROS:
Price
Clear optics
Holds zero (mounted on a Ruger 10/22 with 600+ rounds)
Zero locking and resetting features are easy to use and work well
Solid rugged construction (I've jostled the gun it's mounted to and knocked the stock more than I'd like to admit)

Cons:
The only gripe I have is I wish the illumination was a bit brighter. I shouldn't even list this as a con because I knew it wouldn't be as bright as I'd like before i bought it. For clarification the illumination is plenty bright for the intended purpose, IE. early morning or closer to dusk, but under a noon day sun on a clear day it's just barely noticeable which i was hoping wouldn't be the case so I could use it to contrast against large silhouette targets. All in all a great deal and a quality optic, I'll be buying the full size version as well.

  1. For the money you can't beat a Leapers Scope. This is my fourth Scope I have made by them and I can't say enough good things about them! Nice clear optics, locking turrets, and now with your choice of 36 Reticle colors LOL!

It's been over a month since I wrote this review. and here's an update.
I've now had a chance to put close to a 1,000 rds down range using this scope, and while I STILL think it's a damn good buy, it does have a flaw.
The cross hairs on this are little wide/thick. While this is not a problem when shooting silhouette targets or small game, it is for target shooting, especially at ranges over 100 yds. This is NOT a target scope it is a HUNTING Scope...

  2. I purchased the UTG 30mm scopes for use on my AK47s and have no regrets. I enjoy shooting long range and really appreciate 3x12 power with Mil-dot reticle. Would really be hard to beat this scope for the money.

  3. OK, I have a Bushmaster fully loaded now with the UTG 30mm 2-12x 44 scope. I was very skeptical at first, but what the heck, I have looked at scopes ranging from $75.0 to $1,000.00 +. When I got this scope, I was very impressed with the quality and the packaging. GREATNESS...... for both. I read the instructions as usual cut and dry. I got the scope mounted on my Bushmaster and was ready for a trail run. The first 2-3 shots were just to sight it in, but believe it or not, hanging a ring on a string to bore site it works perfectly. Next was to hone the scope in on the target. It didn't take me but 30 minutes for the whole process, mounting, bore sighting, honing in on target. Now for the trial run.....East Texas has a lot of wild pig, thats what I was after for my initial kill. I left at 6am on site at 7am. Gun out and ready to go after my coffee. About an hour into my walk I came across a herd digging into the mud. I was about 200 yards out. I made my way a little closer, about 150 yards came across a great upper clearing to where I was shooting down and sun at my back. I picked (250+lbs) out the pig I wanted to hit. To my belief, I raised my AR, sighted in my target, and at about 150 yards one shot, one kill. And it didn't stop there. Although the shot was LOUD, the pigs didn't scatter like I thought they would. I was very surprised. I picked out my next 2-3 targets and believe it or not 7 shots brought down 5 bore. All this using this scope I though this scope was going to be a load of crud. I was WRONG!!!!! So if you want a great quality scope for little money, buy this scope. The multiple colors are great but I just use the norm....black. I loved this scope so much I bought another for my DPMS. I am very satisfied with this scope in all ways.

  4. I had my doubts about how good this scope was even after all the good reviews. But if you have doubts about it just order one and I think you will change your mine.
It arrived over night and I mounted it on a Colt AR .22. After bore sighting it with a laser at 100 YDS, I hit the woods where I have Targets at 25,50 and 100 YDS I was hitting a 6 inch circle at 100 YDS with a .22 caliber rifle. Now that may not sound as good as some of you think it should be,and I agree with you. But for a 70 year old with a nerve tremor I am very satisfied with the results. I purchased the large adjusting wheel and it works extremely well. The scope is as clear or clearer than most I have used in my life.
Now my only concern is how long it will last. It looks very well built and like I said very clear when adjusted,I was using an old license plate with the laser to bore sight and at 100 YDS the plate was extremely clear. I do not know about a larger caliber rifle with a lot of recoil ,but I am thinking about buying a second one for either my .243 or .223.
It has scopes rings with it that seem very well made that fit a picatinny rail (not thin like some are) And flip up scope covers. For the price I think it would be hard to beat.

  5. I wanted a scope with a good zoom for coyote/ varmint hunting. This scope seemed good for my application because it had the ability of close to far range shooting with wide view. I tried using the scope rings it came with just to see if it cleared my ARs front sight. It didn't. This didn't bother me because I was already planning on changing the scope mount for a good solid single base mount. I bought a burris P.E.P.R. scope mount ($85) and it cleared it just fine unless you look into your scope at an awkward angle (which you shouldn't be anyway). This scope/ mount combination looks amazing and I've gotten a lot of compliments on it.

NOTE!! : THIS SCOPE DOESN'T HAVE MUCH ROOM FOR A SINGLE BASE SCOPE MOUNT SINCE IT IS A COMPACT DESIGN! I had to grind down the edge of the front scope mount because it just barely hit where the scope end starts to get bigger. The burris scope mount is aluminum so it shapes very easily if you have a dremel tool. If you aren't ok with grinding on your new $85 scope mount, I would suggest just getting a riser for the stock mount so it will clear the front of your AR15 sight.

A couple of things against the scope are:

    1. UPDATE: I previously wrote that the turrets were off compared to how the crosshairs lined up. I used my bipod on my table, put a level on the turret and lined up the crosshairs with the counter. My original instalation was a little off. I rotated the scope and its on perfectly straight. I would recommend this scope to everyone 100%.

    2. The focus on the side,as you've probably heard about in other reviews, is pretty difficult to turn. Again not a huge complaint because I never felt the need to adjust away from the 100 yard mark anyway.
    3. This one is just an FYI the scope does have good weight to it. If you're planning on a light scope this probably isn't the best one for you. I don't mind it. Heavy duty = you probably don't have to baby it so much. This scope is very clear but has a little bit of distortion very close to the edge. (This is probably hard to avoid with a high power scope.)
.4 This one is a good/ bad. the front cap/sunshade works amazing. the rear cap doesn't stay on very well since it can't go on very far on account of the illumination buttons being so close to the back of the scope. I just took the rear one off.
Overall I love this scope a lot. I've shot out to 300 yards and it hits on target very well. I've had it for quite awhile with alot of shooting and it's held its zero amazingly. (keep in mind I'm using .223/5.56x45. I've read a review or 2 where people haven't had a problem even with .308 recoil) I've been coyote hunting in harsh winter weather where my gun was even icing up from sleet and the scope still funtions and looks lile new. I didn't buy this scope for all the different reticle colors, but it is a plus just to mess around with. Funny to see peoples' reaction when you tell them you can have so many different colors. I really like UTG for their price.
Sorry for the long rant but I wanted to give the most descriptive review possible for people to make the right choice for themselves.

  6. I got this scope to replace a BSA Catseye 3-12x44 scope. I like using Mildots and the BSA didn't have any, and the Illuminated reticle is a nice bonus! The scope comes with some really cool flip-up lens covers that work perfectly. The BSA scope that I replaced had THREADED lens covers... it took a long time to unscrew the covers, and by then the bird or squirrel had already run away!
I also added the big wheel for the AO adjustment knob, and I LOVE it!! The wheel makes it so easy to dial in the perfect focus.
I have shot this scope in very low light, and combined with the illuminated crosshairs, I had no problems seeing my target.
I don't know if this is normal, but my scope came with an extra battery in the box!
Using this scope on a Benjamin Marauder Pisol. Medium height dovetail rings are a perfect fit. I could not be happier with it.

  7. I just mounted this scope on my Ruger SR 556, I think its great, The only thing I need to make it completely perfect is I need a riser to lift it up a little bit. It sits too low with the rings they provide, but a riser will fix that. Good glass, clear, I like the windage and elevation knobs, and it has a selector for distance, so if you zero your weapon at 100 yds you have a knob to range down to 25yd and up to 500 yds. All in all, for the money, great buy!! I would buy again.

UPDATE, I added the medium profile riser and now its perfect. For the Money, Great Buy, really happy with it now.
